16th STREET HEIGHTS RENOVATION

Situated in Washington DC's 16th Street Heights, this 1920's bungalow was completely gut renovated and a new rear addition was added.

The clients looked to add on a master suite, family room, new kitchen, and basement level one-bedroom accessory apartment.

​

During the design process, several existing features were rethought: the front door was moved to allow for a seating group in the living room, the closed stair to the second floor was opened to allow more light from a new stair window, and the existing fireplace was brought back to its original granite glory.

The rear addition, with an asymmetrical roof form, houses the new open kitchen family room on the first floor and the master suite on the second.

The home feels light and airy thanks to large windows, simple detailing and a light color palate. Custom casework was used in the kitchen, butler's pantry, and living room. Wainscot paneling was used in the dining room, while simple paneling was placed on the main stairs to the second floor.
