COASTAL MAINE RESIDENCE

Living room overlooking the water with cathedral ceilings and stone fireplace

This project was a Merit in Architecture Award winner with AIA | DC Chapter Awards.

AWARD-WINNING

“Location, location, location” drove the design of this second home for a Washington, DC couple. Situated on the coast of Penobscot Bay, the site stands on a rocky peninsula that affords 180˚+ views of the bay and a neighboring cove and fields.

Drawing on vernacular architectural forms found in Maine, the house is comprised of two bedroom wings connected with a spacious Great Room, Foyer and exterior Porch. The form ultimately creates an “H” with each gable wing slipping past the other to capture the quintessential Maine views.

In creating the second home for a family of adults, bedrooms were laid out in the house to offer privacy while the main public gathering spaces centered around a soaring great room, a granite fireplace, and a simple kitchen. Each individual bedroom captured views of the water around the home. The master suite occupies the prime spot with views of the bay while being several feet above the sloping rear lawn.

Natural stone, cedar siding and metal roofing all add to the contemporary interpretation of this traditionally inspired home.
